Dewey Decimal System (FYI)

At ECPI University Libraries, print books are arranged using the Dewey Decimal System.

A Dewey Decimal call number acts like a book’s “address” on the library shelf. Call numbers are displayed in the Library Catalog and can be found on the spine of each library book. A standard Dewey Decimal call number will look like this:

The Dewey Decimal system is divided into ten major sections.

  • 000 – Computer science, information and general works
  • 100 – Philosophy, ethics, and psychology
  • 200 – Religion
  • 300 – Social sciences (e.g. economics, education, criminal justice, law, and politics)
  • 400 – Language
  • 500 – Science and mathematics
  • 600 – Applied science and technology (e.g. engineering, business management, nursing, and medicine)
  • 700 – Arts and recreation
  • 800 – Literature
  • 900 – History and geography

The following Dewey Decimal call numbers are especially popular at ECPI University libraries:

  • 004-006: Computer science & cybersecurity
  • 150-159: Psychology
  • 330-339: Economics
  • 364: Criminology
  • 428: English language usage & grammar
  • 510-519: Mathematics
  • 610-619: Health science & nursing
  • 621: Electronics & mechatronics
  • 641: Cooking & recipes
  • 650-659: Business & management
  • 808.5: Public speaking
